FamilySearch announced the digital release of 4 million Freedmen’s Bureau historical records and the launch of a nationwide volunteer indexing effort.
The Goal is to have the complete set (1.5 million records) indexed in time for the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in late 2016.
Member chapters of AAHGS (including AAHGS-Memphis) have partnered with FamilySearch to make these records available and accessible by taking the raw records, extracting the information and indexing them to make them easily searchable online.
Volunteers are needed to help with the groundbreaking project. If you would like to help, you need a FamilySearch.org acccount and the FamilySearch application installed on your computer. See http://discoverfreedmen.org for more information.
